3/7/06. Moth update, 98 species caught so far in my garden in Norden this year. This includes 36 new species from when I started mothing last year. My garden total is now 141. Scarce Silver-lines is a first for Rochdale.

20/6/06 Moth update,72 species caught so far in my garden in Norden this year. This includes 29 new species from when I started mothing last year. My garden total is now 134.

6/6/06 Great Spotted Woodpecker nesting in Rochdale cemetery, Photos of chick in "What's New"

26/5/06 First Hawkmoth of the season. A Lime Hawk moth caught last night along with Narrow-winged Pug and Silver Y. All Photos in Garden Moths section accessed from "Photos of Moths" link

23/4/06. Watergrove Reservoir, Wardle, Rochdale. Tawny Owl sat out in a tree on West side of reservoir, Sedge warbler near hide.

19/4/06. Lesser Redpoll becoming regular visitors to the Niger seed feeder in my garden. Also occasional visits from a pair of Bullfinches. Lesser Spotted Woodpecker (female) seen on Edenfield Rd, Norden, opposite Caldershaw school on 19/4/06.  First serious Mothing night, 4 Species so far.

1-2/4/06.  4 Waxwings in Whitworth in Poplar trees near Daniel St.

29/3/06 First Northern Wheatears seen at Ashworth Moor Reservoir and Naden Valley Reservoirs. 3 Oystercatchers, 2 Great Crested Grebes, 8 Curlew and 27 Goosanders roosting at Ashworth Moor Reservoir this evening.

26/3/06 First Moth trapping session of the year. Robinson trap MV Bulb, 2 X Common Quaker, 1 X Clouded Drab.

25/3/06 Photos of Grey Wagtail and Dipper from Simpson Clough, Rochdale.

22/3/06 34 Curlew, 2 Oystercatchers and 20+ Lapwings roosting at Ashworth Moor Reservoir.

5/3/06 Pair of Dipper seen at Simpson Clough, Rochdale.

4/3/06.  9 Siskins on Niger feeder in my garden this morning, Norden, Rochdale. 43 Twite and 3 Skylarks at Light Hazzles Reservoir, Blackstone Edge, Rochdale.

24/2/06 Leighton Moss. Pair of Lesser Redpoll feeding between feeders and Lillian's hide.  Warton Crag. Good view of Peregrine and Ravens but no sign of Little Owl.

19/2/06 Long-tailed duck at Pine Lake, Carnforth. Black Redstart at Warton, Cote Stones . Peregrines, Buzzards, Ravens and a Little Owl at Warton Crag.

12/2/06 Sparrowhawk takes a Siskin in my garden in Norden, Rochdale.

5/2/06 Six Siskins in a garden in Norden, Rochdale on a Nyger seed feeder. A flock of 15 Lesser Redpoll on Rochdale Golf course

29/1/06 Greenbooth Reservoir. A suspected Goshawk being mobbed by 2 Ravens, soared high and flew South East. 35 Goosanders on Ashworth Moor Reservoir. RSPB Garden bird survey, 14 species in my garden between 09.00 and 10.00 including a Sparrowhawk

21/1/06 Rochdale Winter Birdrace (Organised by Dave Winnard www.wildlifeofrochdale.co.uk ) Steve Collins and myself had a leisurely day out and saw 49 species. Highlights of the day were excellent sightings of Lesser Redpoll and Siskins on Rochdale Golf course and a Little Owl at Pilsworth Higher Barn Farm.

15/1/06 Queens park, Heywood, Grey Wagtail on river Roch, 2 Sparrowhawks above Plumton woods.

14/1/06 Light Hazzles reservoir, Blackstone edge, Rochdale, 2 Ravens.

8/1/06 Ashworth moor reservoir, 60+ Common gulls on water, 2 Goosander. Treecreeper and 2 Nuthatch in Healey Dell

2/1/06 Martin Mere. All the usual stuff. Good views of Barn Owl , 15+ Ruff  and 3 Buzzards

1/1/06 Rochdale Golf course, met up with Steve and Clare Collins. 12 Lesser Redpoll, a few Siskins, 30+ Redwing on Oulder hill school fields

27-3-/12/05 Norfolk trip, plenty of snow!! Excellent views of Snow buntings (50+) and Shore Larks (8) at Holkham. Great photos of Water rail and a Robin at Titchwell. Hundreds of Scoter (Common and a few Velvet), a few Eider and Red breasted Merganser on the sea. (See new section on Outside the North-West for photos)

23/12/05 Marshside, Southport. All the usual stuff, 2 Peregrines on the ground sheltering from the wind and rain, excellent views from the main hide.

18/12/05 Set up a temporary hide in the garden and got some excellent photos of birds on my feeders (photo's in "What's new"), Greenbooth reservoir 3 Goosander (1 drake).

11/12/05 Elton Reservoir, Bury:- Excellent views of Red-necked Grebe (photo's in "What's new"). Greenbooth Reservoir, Rochdale, Falconer flying a Harris hawk.

4/12/05 Rochdale area :- Very wet day with Dave Winnard, Brian Warren, Steve Collins and myself. Highlights, 10+ Goldcrests in Tandle Hill CP, Green Woodpecker and 12 Redwings, Witches Butter in Healey Dell, Handsome club in Rochdale Cemetery. Sparrowhawk eating a blue tit on my hedge in the pouring rain, Norden, Rochdale (Photos in "What's new")

26/11/05 Rochdale area:-  Common Sandpiper at Ashworth moor reservoir, Dipper at Gristlehurst woods on river Roch, Heywood, several Grey wagtails on river Roch at Queens Park Heywood.

13/11/05 Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Loads of Waxcaps on the grasslands. Scarlet Waxcap photos in "What's New". Excellent views of 2 kingfishers. An ideal place for a fungal foray in early October. Should be good for Warblers and Dragonflies.

9/11/05 Moth Report for Norden Rochdale Jan-Oct 2005. All moths caught with Skinner trap and MV bulb in my garden. So far 105 different species.
